global map of social web reveals low level of microblog engagement

The year is 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely… One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invadors. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium…
something like this comes into my mind, when i see the latest global map of social media activity by global web index. the world is entirely occupied by social media – everyone blogs, tweets and retweets, diggs, uploads all his or her photo and videos …. well, not everyone it seems. this quite interesting map from global web index shows us, that by far not everyone is active in social media who as access to the internet. they interviewed 32.000 web users in 16 countries to provide this visualization of social media involvement “across the world”:
in the u.s., the home of facebook, twitter, flickr & co, only 15,3% have ever uploaded a video, 12,8% write their own blog and only 7% are tweeting messages to the world! in contrast, about 43% already uploaded photos and about 45% already manage their own social web profile (i.e. on facebook). here a recent story of techradar fits perfect, quoting that one of its apps, farmville, is more popular than its major rival in the social-networking world – twitter.
when looking at the other analyzed countries, this seems to be the rule of thumb: uploading photos online and managing social web profiles seems to be the activity with the highest involvement. only in china, south korea and japan internet users have a higher activity-index in blogging than in managing their social network profiles. another rule of thumbs seems to be, that twitter-usage is always below blogging-usage. one could say, that a high activity in twitter means a high blogging-activity – that is even true for china and india, who are with over 20% at the top of twitter-activity.
but now to the interesting part:
- what are the reasons for this?
- what is the impact?
- and what are the other >50% of internet users doing?
what are your thoughts? – share them!
