stumbled today over this twitter-study from sysomos. according to their research analyzing over 11.5 million twitter accounts, about 85 percent of all twitter users post less than one tweet per day and 21 percent even never posted a tweet at all.
actually this is a huge amount of people, which leads to the question, why they do not tweet after getting an account. did they just wanted to grab a good name for later? did they find out, that they have nothing to say in 140 chars? or do they simply did not unterstand, how this twitter-thing actually works?
anyhow, here are some more interesting results of the research:
- 93.6 percent of users have less than 100 followers, while 92.4 percent follow less than 100 people.
- 5 percent of twitter users account for 75 percent of all activity
- 81 percent of twitter-users are under 30 of age
- new york has the most twitters users, followed by los angeles, toronto, san francisco and boston; while Detroit was the fast-growing city over the first five months of 2009
- more than 50 percent of all updates are published using tools – mobile and web-based – other than twitter.com. tweetdeck is the most popular non-twitter.com tool with 19.7 percent market share.
- there are more women on twitter (53 percent) than men (47 percent)
- of people who identify themselves as PR professionals, 65.5 percent have never posted an update
methodology:
Sysomos analyzed more than 11.5 million Twitter accounts, including the indexing of user profiles and status updates. Location and age information is based on information disclosed in their profile pages (link to the appendix with graphs on how many people disclose location/age/gender). Genders are based on the analysis of user’s real names as disclosed against extensive lists of male and female names.
